SpreadacresThe YWCA of India Project at Dehra Dun, which started in 1945, caters especially to elderly women. “Spreadacres” House is located at the foot hills of the Shivalik ranges of the Himalayas consists of a Home and Day Centre for the Elderly. The project was started with the objective of providing a home to retired elderly women who needed a safe place to stay.
A high standard is maintained and all facilities are provided to make the elderly residents comfortable. The campus has a orchard of many fruit bearing trees-Litchees,Lokat,Jamun,Mangoes,etc. The Day Centre was set up with funds from Help the Aged, U.K and. reaches out to elderly residents of Hathibalkala, Salawala village, Dehra Dun. The YWCA of India provides them a stable and comfortable place to spend their day. In addition, they are also trained to take up income generating projects to help meet their daily needs. At present the elderly are earning their living by.making making candles and sewing recyclable bags. The market for these is promoted by the Social Workers who are full time staff of the YWCA.
The Day Centre Programme consists of:

  • Health Awareness, nutrition, sanitation, free medical facilities, family counseling,
  • Self-reliance “Adopt a Granny” scheme and income generation programmes.
  • Referral services – Old Age Pension, Red Cross and other Hospitals and government agencies.
  • Recreation/Celebration of National events, outings, physical activities.
