In 2010, young women at the YWCA Solomon Islands created The Rise Up! Young Women’sLeadership Programme with support from the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement. Rise Up! was specifically designed to harness the leadership potential of the most marginalised and disadvantaged young women in the region, including those living in urban settlements and rural areas.
Rise Up! includes a combination of participatory training, mentoring and practical leadershipexperiences for young women. During the programme, participants learn leadership skills, anddiscuss social issues affecting young women in their communities and how to deal with thoseissues. Participants also learn basic advocacy skills and then, in small groups, plan and delivera community level advocacy project with the support of a mentor.
Rise Up! Phase IV is funded by the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade(DEFAT). The programme is being implemented by World YWCA with YWCA member associations in each implementing country, led by Rise up leads in each county.
The programme is being implemented in 9 countries (Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Thailand).
The goal of the programme is that Young women are confident leaders who create safe spaces and networks and inspire other young women to build an inclusive society, imparting intergenerational leadership within the YWCA movement. We plan to impact over 6000 young women aged between 18-30 years through the Rise Up! Programme.
RiseUp! is led by young women, for young women and involves:
Peer to peer leadership and advocacy training for young women to build knowledge, skills, and network to advocate on important issues in their lives, eg; violence against women and girls, sexual and reproductive health and rights, climate justice, and gender equality. Creating safe spaces for young women to build confidence, share knowledge, and inspire all young women to use their voices and advocate together for social change. Supporting young women to claim their rights as part of a life-long leadership journey.
Rise Up! is a programme initiated by the World YWCA and YWCA of India is part of the Project which has been implemented in phases across countries . RiseUp! in its Phase IV plans to support over 6,000 women aged 18 to 30 years to know and claim their human rights, build, and exercise their leadership capabilities and to work collectively to mobilise for change. During this nationwide programme implementation, participants learn leadership skills, and discuss social issues affecting young women in their communities and how to deal with those issues including capacity building.
